Genocide, Holocaust, and Voices of the Oppressed

Welcome to The Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem's 10th Grade English Blog, "Remember Me: Genocide, Holocaust, & Voices of the Oppressed." Our young ladies have worked hard to prepare a series of presentations about genocides that have occurred, or are still occurring, around the world. The posts and files here are some examples of the brilliant work they've done for this educational unit, as well as the instructional materials they used to get started.

Please be advised that some of the images and content in this blog are of a disturbing and graphic nature.

Overview

This presentation project began as a joint effort between Afonso (Al) Albergaria, my co-teacher, and me. Al received a New Visions grant to build a new research-based curriculum, and decided to focus on Cambodia. When we began working together, we decided to make his research part of this overall unit on Genocide, Holocaust, & Voices of the Oppressed.

Final Project Handout and Rubrics

One of the goals of this instructional unit was to have students begin thinking about how to create their own assignments and assess themselves. So, a week before students began working on these presentations, for homework we asked them what they thought should go into the PowerPoint files they were to create. They came up with so many great ideas that all Al and I had to do was put it all together as a handout. The link below will bring you to the Final Project Handout and Rubrics that we gave to students just before Mid-Winter Break. They had all of break to get started, and we worked on their presentations in class most of the week after Break.
